This very ancient grain, also known as Ölandsvete, was once grown in all of Europe and North Africa. Named for Öland in the Baltic Sea, an island that is part of Sweden. A winter red wheat with exceptional flavor and higher protein. Part of the Slow Foods Movement and the Ark of Taste. Excellent for yeast- or sourdough-leavened breads. Plant in the fall. Organic.
These heritage wheats are proving to be more digestible for many people who cannot eat modern grains. Approximately 600 seeds per 1oz. Sow at 2oz. per 100 sq. ft., 3-4# per 1000 sq. ft., or 100-125# per acre.
